Boric acid is a weak, monobasic Lewis acid of boron with mild antiseptic, antifungal, and antiviral properties. It is employed in various pharmaceutical and cosmetic products for its buffering and antimicrobial characteristics.​

Boric acid is used as a buffering agent in culture media and can act as a preservative to prevent bacterial and fungal growth.
