Hemacolor reagents are approved for In Vitro Diagnostic Use for human blood. Although stains used for human blood will often work with rodents and other mammals, no testing has been performed to document how well the Hemacolor reagents work with mouse blood or bone marrow. Bone marrow slides typically take longer to stain than peripheral blood smears, so separate procedures would need to be developed for fresh peripheral blood or bone marrow specimens.

Can this kit also be used to produce blood smears where the blood was previously stored in EDTA tubes?
1 answer-
Yes, the Hemacolor reagents are suitable for use with samples anticoagulated with EDTA. If the sample is not anticoagulated, the smears must be made immediately upon the blood being drawn. These reagents are not suitable for use with samples anticoagulated with heparin or sodium citrate. Smears should be prepared from fresh samples when prepared from anticoagulated blood with EDTA.
