Fluorescein diacetate (FDA) is a non-fluorescent molecule, which is hydrolysed to fluorescent fluorescein in live cells. Dead cells cannot accumulate or hydrolyse FDA.
Application
Fluorescein diacetate has been used for the differentiation of live cells from dead cells.

It has been used as a viability stain for cultured neurons and plant ways, and in measuring of esterase and cholinesterase activity. No. Only upon hydrolysis of the esters, catalyzed by cellular esterase, the lactone ring opens yielding fluorescein. Only the fluorescein form is fluorescent.
