General description

Carbonic Anhydrase is a metalloenzyme with zinc.[1] The active site of carbonic anhydrase contains three conserved histidine residues (His94, His96 and His119).[2]

Application

Carbonic Anhydrase has been used:

• as a component of nine-protein mixture for the comparative proteomic mass spectrometry analysis of bovine brain samples[3]
• as a molecular marker in gel filtration chromatography[4]
• as a standard protein to test the recovery of CMA/20 microdialysis probe[5]

Biochem/physiol Actions

Carbonic anhydrase is essential for the reversible hydration of carbon dioxide.[1] It is also crucial for the physiological processes including respiration, ion transport, acid–base balance, lipid and carbohydrate metabolic pathways.[1] Carbonic anhydrase participates in electrolyte secretion and in the carbon dioxide fixation.[2]

One collagen digestion unit (CDU) liberates peptides from collagen from bovine achilles tendon equivalent in ninhydrin color to 1.0 μmole of leucine in 5 hours at pH 7.4 at 37 °C.
