L-Arabinose ist das natürlich vorkommende Isomer und ist ein Bestandteil von pflanzlichen Polysacchariden. Die meisten Bakterien enthalten ein induzierbares Arabinose Operon, das für eine Reihe von Enzymen und Transportern codiert, mithilfe derer L-Arabinose als einzige Kohlenstoffquelle der mikorbiellen Kultur ausreicht.
