Conn's Biological Stains, 10th Edition, page 250 states, "entry of the dye into cells may be achieved by direct insertion of the hydrophilic calcein, or by the uptake of calcein AM with intracellular formation of calcein."

Calcein ist ein Calcium-abhängiges fluoreszierendes Molekül. Calcein wird für die fluorometrische Bestimmung von Calcium und die EDTA- (Ethylendiamintetraessigsäure)-Titration von Calcium verwendet.
