BSA ist ein bekannter Fettsäure(FA)-Träger. Demnach kann in FA-Anwendungen wie Zellkulturen das spezifische BSA für die Kontrolle von spezifischen Fettsäuren, die zum Kultivieren von Zelllinien verwendeten werden, wichtig sein, da verschiedene Zelllinien unterschiedliche Sensitivitäten gegenüber bestimmten FAs aufweisen können. Aus diesem Grund eignet sich fettsäurefreies BSA für Zellkulturanwendungen, bei denen der spezifische Fettsäuregehalt sorgfältig kontrolliert werden muss. Dadurch können Forscher die für die entsprechenden Zelllinien benötigten spezifischen Fettsäuren kontrollieren. Fettsäurefreies BSA gewährleistet außerdem eine maximale Anzahl an optimalen Bindungsstellen für die spezifischen Fettsäuren, die Forscher in entsprechenden Zellkulturversuchen verwenden möchten. Zudem werden mit fettsäurefreiem BSA jegliche Bedenken hinsichtlich potenziell in nicht fettsäurefreiem BSA vorhandenen endogenen Fettsäuren ausgeräumt.
