N-Acetylneuraminsäure tritt häufig als terminaler Zuckerrest in Glykoproteinen an Zelloberflächen auf. Glykoproteine an Zelloberflächen spielen eine wichtige Rolle bei interzellulären Erkennungs- und Interaktionsprozessen sowie bei der Zelladhäsion. Membranglykoproteine sind auch für Tumorwachstum und Metastasenbildung von Bedeutung.
