Thimerosal ist ein Sulfhydryl (Thiol)-oxidierendes Reagens, das eine Vielzahl von Sulfhydryl-abhängigen Enzymen und Proteinen wie PI3-Kinase-abhängige Methionin-Synthase, Glutamattransportrezeptoren und Na⁺+K⁺-abhängige ATPasen hemmen kann.
