General description
Progesterone is a steroid hormone secreted by the ovaries.
Application
This product is not recommended for use in binding assays.
Progesterone-Water Soluble has been used:
- for in vitro maturation of oocyte complexes
- as a σ1R antagonist to study its effect on sigma 1 receptor
- to study its effect on the differentiation of human multipotent mesenchymal stromal cells (hMSCs) in vitro
Biochem/physiol Actions
Progesterone is a hormone that maintains pregnancy. It is essential for embryo formation, development and survival in almost all mammals. This hormone exhibits its action via progesterone receptor, which is specifically expressed in the endometrial stroma throughout pregnancy. It is known to prevent preterm delivery, when administered intramuscularly. Progesterone also controls gonadotropin secretion, activates sexual behavior and triggers ovarian events leading to ovulation. It stimulates the growth and differentiation of the uterus and prevents uterine contractility.

The molecular weight for the compound progesterone is 314.46 g/mole. When calculating molar (e.g., :M, mM, etc.) solutions, the molecular weight of
the cyclodextrin component of the complex is typically disregarded, and the solution is prepared considering the amount of the hormone in the preparation and its respective molecular weight. The lot specific certificate of analysis can be reviewed to determine the mg of progesterone present in the solid.
