General description
Acridine orange is a metachromatic fluorescent cationic dye that permeates the cell membrane and intercalates DNA and RNA. It allows for visual detection of nucleic acids on agarose and polyacrylamide gels.
Application
Acridinorange, ein zelldurchdringender metachromatischer fluoreszierender kationischer Farbstoff, der DNA und RNA interkaliert, wird in der Fluoreszenz- und Epifluoreszenzmikroskopie verwendet. Der Acridinorange-Farbstoff wurde verwendet, um den Mitochondrien- und Lysosomen-Gehalt mittels Durchflusszytometrie zu analysieren, um Multidrug-Resistenz zu charakterisieren und um Veränderungen in der mitochondrialen Masse während der Apoptose in Ratten-Thymozyten zu messen.

Biochem/physiol Actions
Acridine orange intercalates into the nucleic acids of double helix and is detectable as green fluorescence at 530 nm. It binds electrostatically to the phosphate groups in single stranded nucleic acids and is detectable at red fluorescence at 640 nm.[1]
