Ein Hormon, das als Mediator der photisch induzierten antigonadotropen Aktivität bei photoperiodischen Säugetieren postuliert wurde. Wirkt der apoptotischen Wirkung von Etoposid in Knochenmarkszellen entgegen. Melatoninrezeptoren sind an ein G-Protein-System gekoppelt. Hemmt die Stickstoffmonoxid-Synthase (NOS) im Kleinhirn der Ratte.
