General description

Toluene is a high-purity, non-polar organic solvent widely used in gas chromatography (GC), high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and sample preparation workflows. Due to its low UV absorbance and excellent solvating power for hydrophobic compounds, toluene is ideal for separating aromatic hydrocarbons, lipids, and other non-polar analytes. It ensures minimal interference from impurities, making it suitable for trace-level detection and quantification in environmental, pharmaceutical, and petrochemical analyses.

Application

  • a Toluene is commonly used as a solvent and carrier medium in GC for the analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), especially aromatic hydrocarbons
  • In normal-phase HPLC, toluene serves as a non-polar mobile phase component for separating hydrophobic analytes such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) 
  • Used as a mobile phase to separate C₆₀ and C₇₀ fullerenes by gel permeation chromatography
