General description

Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is an organosulfur compound which is a dipolar aprotic solvent. It remains liquid across a broad temperature range, acts as a strong electron donor, and possesses high polarity. These characteristics make it an excellent and selective solvent for a variety of organic and even polymeric compounds. DMSO is a widely used solvent in organic synthesis and analytical applications since it is fully miscible with water and various organic solvents, enabling it to dissolve both polar and nonpolar substances.

Application

DMSO is used
  • As a solvent in the synthesis of 3,5-Diiodo-8-aryl-BODIPYs by Double Aromatic Finkelstein Reaction.
  • As a green solvent in the preparation of novel anticorrosive epoxy coatings.
  • As solvent in H1 nuclear magnetic spectroscopy technique.
