General description

Micro Particles or Latex Beads, commonly known as polystyrene microparticles, are negatively charged colloidal particles. The microparticles are produced through a polymerization reaction of styrene under controlled conditions. The conducive environment of the reaction induces spontaneous coalescent bead formation. Micro Particles or Latex beads are supplied in aqueous solutions composed of polymer particles with water. Polystyrene′s refractive index at 589 nm is 1.5905 and 1.602 at 486 nm.

Application

Micro Particles or Latex Beads is used for a wide variety of applications like:

  • Electron Microscopy.
  • Cell Counter Calibration.
  • Immunodiagnostics, especially for latex agglutination tests, and
  • Phagocytosis Research.

Analysis Note

For every lot exact values of particle size and standard deviation are determined with an accuracy of 0.01 μm using a Coulter Multisizer.

Questions

1–5 of 5 Questions
  1. Are the microparticles suitable for direct use in aseptic experiments (e.g. tissue culture)? If no, how may they be sterilised for such work?

    1 answer
    1. This product has not been tested specifically in tissue culture applications. As polystyrene is not autoclavable, they would need ethylene oxide gas sterilization or gamma irradiation for aseptic experiments.

      Helpful?

  2. What is the Mw of the PS microsphere?

    1 answer
    1. The molecular weight of the polystyrene has not been determined.

  3. We would like to use the PSL for an aerosol particle generator. Is there any recommended dilution?

    1 answer
    1. This solution contains 10% solids. The product is not tested for suitability in any specific application. The end user would have to determine the appropriate dilution, experimentally. A suggestion would be to initially try the solution neat followed by further serial 2 or 4 fold dilutions in an attempt to determine the optimum concentration for the application. 4. Does the material with part number 59769 contain surfactant to aid in dispersibility? Also, what is the pH of this material?

    1 answer
    1. The product polystyrene microparticles does not contain surfactants and comes in deionized water. The particles have an anionic surface charge due to sulfate groups coming from the initiator in the polymerization reaction. Additionally, the particles’ Zeta potential is in the – 50 mV region over a wide pH range from approximately 2 through 10.

  5. Does this product have surfactants?

    1 answer
    1. Product 59769 - Polystyrene microparticles do not contain surfactants. The polystyrene microparticles are supplied in deionized water.
