General description

Serotonin/5-HT (5-hydroxytryptamine) is a neurotransmitters present in the brain. Anti-Serotonin specifically stains enterochromaffin cells in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded sections of normal human appendix and serotonin-containing carcinoid tumors. In the central nervous system (CNS), the antiserum reacts with serotonin-containing fibers in perfusion-fixed, free-floating sections of rat brain.

Specificity

The antibody reacts with serotonin-containing fibers in paraformaldehyde perfusion-fixed, frozen sections of rat brain. The product specifically stains enterochromaffin cells in formalin-fixed, paraffin embedded sections of normal human appendix and serotonin-containing carcinoid tumors.

Immunogen

Serotonin creatinine sulfate complex conjugated with formaldehyde to BSA.

Application

Anti-Serotonin antibody has been used in immunocytochemistry.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Serotonin/5-HT, the midbrain raphe system controls mood, emotion, cognition and motor functions, circadian and neuroendocrine rhythms, like food intake, sleep and reproductive activity. It participates in natural reward-related physiology and behaviour, from feeding to sexual activity.

Physical form

Supplied as a liquid containing 15 mM sodium azide as preservative.

Storage and Stability

For continuous use, store at 2-8 °C for a maximum of one month. For extended storage freeze in working aliquots. Repeated freezing and thawing, or storage in "frost-free" freezers, is not recommended. If slight turbidity occurs upon prolonged storage, clarify the solution by centrifugation before use.

One of the most interesting riddles within crustaceans is the origin of Cladocera (water fleas). Cladocerans are morphologically diverse and in terms of size and body segmentation differ considerably from other branchiopod taxa (Anostraca, Notostraca, Laevicaudata, Spinicaudata and Cyclestherida).
