Application

The effect of exposure of sertraline hydrochloride was studied in chronically prepared ovine fetus.[1] It was used in glucocorticoid function assay to study the effect of antidepressants on glucocorticoid receptor function in humans.[2]

Biochem/physiol Actions

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, antidepressant.
Sertraline suppresses platelet function and exhibits antiplatelet and endothelium protective functions. It relieves depression and improves the quality of life in patients with cardiovascular disorders.[3][4] It can also be prescribed to treat depression in Parkinson′s disease.[5]

Cassidy Delaney et al.
American journal of physiology. Lung cellular and molecular physiology, 301(6), L937-L944 (2011-09-13)
Maternal use of selective serotonin (5-HT) reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) is associated with an increased risk for persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN), but little is known about 5-HT signaling in the developing lung. We hypothesize that 5-HT plays a

Postpartum depression affects many individuals after parturition, and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are often used as the first-line treatment; however, both SSRIs and lactation are independently associated with bone loss due to the role of serotonin in bone remodeling.

Women mobilize up to 10% of their bone mass during lactation to provide milk calcium. About 8%-13% of mothers use selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) to treat peripartum depression, but SSRIs independently decrease bone mass. Previously, peripartal use of the
