Descripción

General description

A metal ion chelator that crosses the blood-brain barrier and acts as a neurotoxic antibiotic. Reported to dissolve senile plaques and reduce amyloid′s ability to clump together, apparently by trapping the Cu²⁺ and Zn²⁺ that reduces the build-up of these deposits. Exhibits greater affinity for Cu²⁺ and Zn²⁺ than for Ca²⁺ and Mg²⁺. Shown to induce distal dominant axonopathy in animal models. Clioquinol treatment has been shown to be beneficial in a mouse model of Alzheimer′s disease.
