General description

C-Phycocyanin is a protein pigment, that is soluble in water. It is an important constituent of Spirulina platensis.

Application

C-Phycocyanin from Spirulina sp. has been used:
  • as a standard to characterize the fluorescence interactions and oxidation behaviors for model compounds
  • as a standard to confirm the antibacterial activity
  • to characterize the recombinantly expressed α-subunit of C-phycocyanin from Synechocystis sp. PCC6803 (HisCPC)
  • to identify the phycocyanin from water extracted Spirulina maxima sample

Biochem/physiol Actions

C-phycocyanin can act as an active inhibitor of A53Tα-synuclein. It possess anti-inflammatory properties.
C-phycocyanin, a biliprotein with antioxidant properties, was shown to induce apoptosis in HeLa cells by stimulating expression of pro-apoptotic genes as well as by inducing increased release of cytochrome c from the mitochondria. [1]

Questions

  1. The Protein Content (Lowry) can be used as purity of c-Phycocyanin?

    1 answer
    1. For C-Phycocyanin from Spirulina sp. (P2172), the protein content, as determined by the Lowry method, is reported in the Certificate of Analysis and is typically in the range of 30–50%. However, this value reflects the total protein content in the lyophilized powder, not the purity of c-Phycocyanin itself. The product is only partially purified, and other proteins may be present. Purity is not determined by the Lowry method but rather by SDS-PAGE, which assesses the presence of major bands. Therefore, the protein content determined by the Lowry method should not be used as a direct measure of c-Phycocyanin purity.
