General description

Benserazide is a peripheral decarboxylase inhibitor.

Application

Benserazide has been used:
  • to inhibit dopa-decarboxylase
  • to induce dyskinesia
  • to test on purified bacterial TDCs to assess the extent to which it could affect bacterial decarboxylases
  • as a peripheral dopa decarboxylase inhibitor to treat mice

Biochem/physiol Actions

Inhibitor of L-aromatic amino acid decarboxylase.
Benserazide can block HK2 enzymatic activity in vitro. It is used along with levodopa to treat Parkinson′s disease.

Questions

  1. What is the recommended storage temperature for Benserazide hydrochloride (Product B7283) after the drug is suspended in water?

    1 answer
    1. Benserazide hydrochloride is soluble in water and should be dissolved in oxygen-free boiled water containing 0.1% sodium metabisulfite or other antioxidants. The solutions decompose on exposure to light and air. Benserazide HCl is a tan, photosensitive solid and should be stored tightly sealed at -4°C, protected from exposure to light. It is not recommended to store the aqueous solution for more than one day.

Additionally, the product is subject to oxidation, and it is advisable to make solutions fresh daily. The product should be stored, as supplied, at room temperature for up to 1 year, and it should be protected from light.
