Application

Sodium periodate is use in molecular biology and carbohydrate research to cleave carbon-carbon bonds of carbohydrates alginates, chitosans, hyaluronan, scleroglucan/schizophyllan, cellulose nucleic acids other molecules rich in hydroxyls and ketones to prepare them for chemical and physical modifications.
Useful reagent for the oxidation of carbohydrates prior to labeling with biotin hydrazide

Other Notes

Periodate oxidation of agarose gels in enzyme immobilization[1]; Preparation of oligonucleotide 3′-dialcohols in ribonucleoside labeling[2]; Cleavage of cross-linked proteins[3].
