General description

Maleic acid (MA) is a dicarboxylic acid that undergoes esterification with ethanol in the presence of cation-exchange resin catalysts to form diethyl maleate. Its crystalline structure has been analyzed. Reaction kinetics and mechanism of the isomerization of maleic acid to fumaric acid in the presence of ceric and bromide ions has been investigated. The reaction mechanism and reactivity ratios for the radical copolymerization of maleic acid with styrene have been determined.

Application

Maleic acid has been used in the preparation of tris-maleate buffer[1] and sodium maleate buffer.[2] It has also been used for the pretreatment of poplar tracheid cell walls for the spectroscopic analysis of lignin.[3] It may be used to synthesize superswelling acrylamide/maleic acid hydrogels.

Questions

1–3 of 3 Questions
  1. Is the HPLC method used for Maleic assay separating the maleic acid from the fumaric acid peak? In the CoA that I have on batch 416071 Purity is NLT99%. Does that mean that fumaric acid must be less than 1%? Other suppliers specify fumaric acid % by HPLC.

    1 answer
    1. The HPLC method used for the purity assay would separate maleic acid from fumaric acid. Fumaric acid would be resolved and would elute within the run time, with a significant difference in retention time between the two acids. Although fumaric acid content is not specifically tested or reported during the release of this product, the purity stated as ≥99% is the chromatographic purity determined by % peak area. This would indicate that total impurities must be less than or equal to 1%.

  2. How can I determine the shelf life / expiration / retest date of this product?

    1 answer
    1. If this product has an expiration or retest date, it will be shown on the Certificate of Analysis (COA, CofA). If there is no retest or expiration date listed on the product's COA, we do not have suitable stability data to determine a shelf life. For these products, the only date on the COA will be the release date; a retest, expiration, or use-by-date will not be displayed.
For all products, we recommend handling per defined conditions as printed in our product literature and website product descriptions. We recommend that products should be routinely inspected by customers to ensure they perform as expected.
For products without retest or expiration dates, our standard warranty of 1 year from the date of shipment is applicable.

  3. How is shipping temperature determined? And how is it related to the product storage temperature?

    1 answer
    1. Products may be shipped at a different temperature than the recommended long-term storage temperature. If the product quality is sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped on wet or dry-ice. If the product quality is NOT affected by short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped at ambient temperature. As shipping routes are configured for minimum transit times, shipping at ambient temperature helps control shipping costs for our customers.
