General description

Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) is a hydrophilic metal chelating agent that transforms metal ions into inactive, cyclic metal complexes. Hence, it has industrial application for resolving metal contamination.

Application

Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid has been used:
  • as a component of labeling buffer, which is used in the washing step during cell fractionation{155)
  • for investigating the effect of papain enzyme on wound debridement and other skin issues
  • for harvesting rat arterial smooth muscle cell after its pre-treatment for its use in flow cytometry analysis[1]

Biochem/physiol Actions

Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) is not easily administered by the gastrointestinal tract. Intravenous administration of sodium EDTA results in hypocalcemic tetany. It is generally useful in plasma or molecular diagnostics and acts by chelating calcium. EDTA serves as an anticoagulant for haematological cell counting and cell morphological analysis.

Questions

1–4 of 4 Questions
  1. How can I determine the shelf life / expiration / retest date of this product?

    1 answer
    1. If this product has an expiration or retest date, it will be shown on the Certificate of Analysis (COA, CofA). If there is no retest or expiration date listed on the product's COA, we do not have suitable stability data to determine a shelf life. For these products, the only date on the COA will be the release date; a retest, expiration, or use-by-date will not be displayed.
For all products, we recommend handling per defined conditions as printed in our product literature and website product descriptions. We recommend that products should be routinely inspected by customers to ensure they perform as expected.
For products without retest or expiration dates, our standard warranty of 1 year from the date of shipment is applicable.

  2. How is shipping temperature determined? And how is it related to the product storage temperature?

    1 answer
    1. Products may be shipped at a different temperature than the recommended long-term storage temperature. If the product quality is sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped on wet or dry-ice. If the product quality is NOT affected by short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped at ambient temperature. As shipping routes are configured for minimum transit times, shipping at ambient temperature helps control shipping costs for our customers. 4. Hello!! We are aiming to create a 15% solution of EDTA and wondering what the ratio of EDTA to water should be. We had internal guidance that recommended something close to a 1:1 relationship between EDTA and water. What guidance can you give?

    1 answer
    1. A 15% solution would consist of 15 grams of a given material in a total volume of 100mL. For example, to prepare a 15% solution, a partial volume of solvent (in this case, water) is added to a vessel. The compound of interest (in this case EDTA) is added while stirring and then additional solvent is added to bring the final volume to 100ml. There would be slight adjustments needed depending on the specific solvent and the measure being used - weight per volume or weight per weight. Unfortunately, EDTA is not soluble in water at 15%. The addition of a base, such as sodium hydroxide, may increase the solubility, however this has not been verified. Higher solubility rates may also be achievable using a sodium salt form, such as E4884.
