General description

We are committed to bringing you Greener Alternative Products, which adhere to one or more of The 12 Principles of Greener Chemistry. This product has been enhanced for energy efficiency and waste prevention when used in cellulosic ethanol research. For more information see the article in biofiles and Enzymes for Alternative Energy Research.

Cellulase from Trichoderma reesei is produced by submerged fermentation of a selected strain of the fungus Trichoderma reesei and catalyzes the breakdown of cellulose into glucose, cellobiose, and higher glucose polymers. It corresponds to a molecular mass of 68 kDa with optimum pH and temperature of 6 and 52° C, respectively.

Application

Cellulase from Trichoderma reesei has been used:
  • for aqueous extraction of oil from corn germ
  • in the enzymatic hydrolysis of Sweet Sorghum Bagasse (SSB)
  • in the enzymatic digestion of paper grids
Cellulase from Sigma has been used to degrade cello-oligosaccharides into glucose in order to investigate the biodegradability of bioabsorbable bacterial cellulose (BBC).[1]

Biochem/physiol Actions

Cellulase complexes with β-glucosidase for degrading cellobiose to glucose polymer. The lignin content in straw and furfural residues hampers cellulase production.

  1. What is the working pH and temperature, please?

    1 answer
    1. For cellulase (C2730) the optimal pH range is 4.5 - 6.0, and the optimal temperature range is 50 - 60°C, as shown in the graphic below.

      Helpful?

  2. Using Cellulases (C2730) and noticed a peak around 20–22 minutes in HPLC with a carbohydrate column. Could this product contain residual sugars (e.g. glucose, oligosaccharides) from the fermentation medium or added stabilizers like sugar alcohols?

    1 answer
    1. This product contains sorbitol, which is a sugar alcohol.

      Helpful?

  3. What is the molecular weight of the enzyme, or the average molecular weight of the enzymes in the cocktail?

    1 answer
    1. As listed in the 'PROPERTIES' section, the molecular weight of this enzyme is approximately 68 kDa.

      Helpful?

  4. How many types of enzyne contian in Product C2730, cellulase?

    1 answer
    1. The types of enzymes contained in this product are proprietary.

      Helpful?

  5. What does the aqueous solution in which the cellulases are stored contain?

    1 answer
    1. While the specific formulation of this material is considered proprietary, this aqueous solution includes sodium chloride and potassium sorbate.

      Helpful?
