General description

Hydrochloric acid solution, a clear colorless liquid, is a solution of hydrogen chloride gas dissolved in water. It is a strong inorganic acid.

Application

Hydrochloric acid solution (HCl solution) is mainly used to adjust the pH in cell culture medium.
It can also be used:
  • In the extraction of elderberry anthocyanins by endothelial cells.
  • To convert iron(III) perchlorate to Fe(III) ions which can then form a complex with acetohydroxamic acid (FeAHA).

The hydrochloric acid solution has been used:
  • to acidify the surface water sample and to prevent interference from carbonate concentrations up to 10 mg L-1 with organic carbon detector (OCD) detection
  • to adjust the pH of complete transfection media for transfection with chitosan/pDNA nanoparticle complexes
  • to prepare artificial tear solution (ATS) to incorporate the fluorescently tagged cholesteryl ester

Biochem/physiol Actions

Hydrochloric acid (HCl) is commonly used in research and large-scale applications. Its large-scale applications include the refinement of ore to produce tin and tantalum, the cleaning of metal products, and the hydrolysis of starch and proteins in the production of food products. HCl is also used in chemical synthesis. It can also be used in hydrolyzing samples for chromatographic analysis, such as in matairesinol, in flax seed, glycopeptides, κ-carrageenan derived oligosaccharides, and syn- and anti-1,3-diols. HCl is also used as a bleaching agent to neutralize alkaline agents in the food, textile, metal, and rubber industries.

Questions

1–5 of 5 Questions
  1. What is the molarity of this product?

    1 answer
    1. The concentration of this solution is 1.0 N or 1 Normal. As Hydrochloric acid (HCl) is monoprotic, this corresponds to a molarity of 1.0 M.

  2. How can I determine the shelf life / expiration / retest date of this product?

    1 answer
    1. If this product has an expiration or retest date, it will be shown on the Certificate of Analysis (COA, CofA). If there is no retest or expiration date listed on the product's COA, we do not have suitable stability data to determine a shelf life. For these products, the only date on the COA will be the release date; a retest, expiration, or use-by-date will not be displayed.
For all products, we recommend handling per defined conditions as printed in our product literature and website product descriptions. We recommend that products should be routinely inspected by customers to ensure they perform as expected.
For products without retest or expiration dates, our standard warranty of 1 year from the date of shipment is applicable.

  3. What is the density of this product in g/mL?

    1 answer
    1. The density of this product is not determined. However, product 1.0957, another 1 N HCl product option, lists a density of 1.02 g/mL. A similar or identical density would be expected for this product.

  4. How is shipping temperature determined? And how is it related to the product storage temperature?

    1 answer
    1. Products may be shipped at a different temperature than the recommended long-term storage temperature. If the product quality is sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped on wet or dry-ice. If the product quality is NOT affected by short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped at ambient temperature. As shipping routes are configured for minimum transit times, shipping at ambient temperature helps control shipping costs for our customers. For more information, please refer to the Storage and Transport Conditions document: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/deepweb/assets/sigmaaldrich/marketing/global/documents/316/622/storage-transport-conditions-mk.pdf

  5. What chemical grade is this product (ACS/USP?)

    1 answer
    1. This product is intended for use in cell culture and has been determined to be suitable for mammalian cell culture. It does not adhere to all of the testing requirements outlined by the ACS or USP. A list of our ACS reagents for these chemicals is available at this link: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/US/en/search/7647-01-0?facet=facet_web_special_grade%3AACS%20reagent&focus=products&page=1&perpage=30&sort=relevance&term=7647-01-0&type=cas_number and our USP selection is available at this link: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/US/en/search/7647-01-0?facet=facet_web_agency_method%3AUSP&focus=products&page=1&perpage=30&sort=relevance&term=7647-01-0&type=cas_number.

The link below includes additional HCl solution options, some of which are USP/NF grade:
