General description

Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is an aprotic solvent. Therapeutic and toxic molecules that are not soluble in water are often soluble in DMSO. Liquid nitrogen used in conjunction with a cryoprotective agent such as DMSO is a widely used method for preserving cells. DMSO is used to prepare stock solutions of various molecules and is also used as a control for these molecules. It has been used in cell migration assay for dissolving post-migration cells. BPC-tested DMSO also meets the requirements of biotechnology and tissue engineering applications.

Application

Dimethyl sulfoxide has been used as a vehicle control to culture and induce hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) activation in vivo.[1][1] It has also been used to prepare a stock solution to study the cytotoxicity of ferulic acid (FA) on nucleus pulposus (NP) cells.[2]

Features and Benefits

Ready-to-use sterile filtered product conveniently packaged in septum screw-capped amber bottles. Meets USP and EP testing requirements

Disclaimer

Supercools easily and remelts slowly at room temperature. Solidified product can be re-liquified by warming to room temperature without detriment to the product.

Questions

1–10 of 17 Questions
  1. Is it okay to mix it with freezing media that is kept refrigerated? Additionally, when I mixed DMSO with freezing media that was kept refrigerated, a white floating substance appeared. Do you know what might have caused this?

    1 answer
    1. The DMSO is stable at room or refrigerated temperatures. Typically, cell freezing media containing serum and DMSO, are stable for at least several days when thawed and refrigerated. Other constituents of freezing medium, primarily serum, may contribute to the appearance of particulates.
