General description
Lactic acid is an α hydroxyl carboxylic acid produced from pyruvate by the enzyme lactate dehydrogenase (LDH). Lactate is one of the main components of Ringer′s lactate or lactated Ringer′s solution.
Application
Sodium DL-lactate solution has been used:
- as a component in DMEM-B to prepare Dulbecco modified Eagle medium (DMEM)-C medium to evaluate the effect of medium composition on in vitro spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs) maintenance
- as a supplement in Dulbecco′s modified Eagle′s medium-nutrient mixture F12 to obtain conditioned media of testicular macrophages
- as a component in non-capacitation medium and TALP medium for sperm preparation and in vitro fertilization[1]
- in 4-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1-piperazineethanesulfonic acid (HEPES) buffered synthetic oviduct fluid (SOF) media for oocyte preservation
Biochem/physiol Actions
Lactic acid is produced by lactic acid bacteria (LAB) during carbohydrate fermentation. Different microorganism synthesize different forms of lactic acid such as L(+), D(-) or DL (racemic mixture). It is preferred in food processing and preservation due to its antimicrobial property. Lactic acid is useful as a flavoring and acidifying agent.
