βO ß-glicerofosfato é um inibidor da serina-treonina fosfatase usado em tampões de reação de quinases. O BGP é frequentemente usado em combinação com outros inibidores de fosfatase/protease para inibição de amplo espectro. Ele funciona como um doador de fosfato orgânico e foi usado em meios de cultura para a diferenciação de células-tronco mesenquimais em células do tipo osteoblasto. O BGP também é usado para tamponar meios M17 para cultura de Lactococcus na expressão de proteínas recombinantes.
Inicia a diferenciação de células-tronco derivadas da medula óssea embebidas em um gel de colágeno/quitosana natural concebido para engenharia de tecidos.
Glycero-2-phosphate is a component of dexamethasone based hormone cocktail used to induce mesechymal stem cell (MSC) differentiation into osteoblasts.

Most references are for induction of bone lineage cells or for inhibition of phosphatase activity in other types of cell culture.
