Gene Information

General description

Betaine (trimethyl glycine) is an osmoprotectant, which is highly effective than proline. It is formed in from choline. Betaine is usually present in grains, spinach, beets, broccoli, shellfish and marine algae.

Application

Betaine hydrochloride has been used as a component of fixative in HEPES or cacodylate buffer to improve preservation of the ultrastructural morphology of human spermatozoa.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Betaine hydrochloride can decrease hepatotoxicity, that is stimulated by ethanol.
End-product of oxidative metabolism of choline, betaine is a general methyl donor, in particular in a minor pathway of methionine biosynthesis. It is used to treat homocystinuria, which is a defect in the major pathway of methionine biosynthesis.

Questions

  1. Hi! I have two questions about betaine hydrochloride: 1. Can it be used in PCR like betaine?; 2. Why is it hard to dissolve at 5M, and how can I fix this? Thanks for your help!

    1 answer
    1. We have not found this to be suitable for PCR.  This product is soluble in water (50 mg/ml), yielding a clear, colorless solution.  The solubility of this product in water has also been reported at 64.7 g/100ml (25 °C).  It is soluble at 5.0 g/100 mL in ethanol.  It is practically insoluble in chloroform and in ether.  The pH of a 5% aqueous solution of this product is 1.0
