乳酸は、有機合成（接着剤の製造）の試薬として使用されます。皮革工業、繊維工業、なめし加工業で使用されます。可塑剤、触媒、または酸性化剤として使用できます。乳酸は、たばこ製品の製造において香味料としても使用されています。
生物化学的／生理学的作用
動物では、乳酸は細胞増殖下および激しい運動などの嫌気性状態下で生成される代謝化合物です。乳酸は酸化されてピルビン酸に戻るか、糖新生を介してグルコースに変換されることができます。乳酸は、数種の哺乳類のニューロンにより、また脳の早期発達中に優先的に代謝されます。 D-乳酸の利用にはL-乳酸と比較して4倍の時間を要しましたが、いずれの異性体も腸から同じ速度で吸収されます。
