It is a mitochondrial matrix enzyme that plays crucial roles in cyanide detoxification, the formation of iron-sulfur proteins and the modification of sulfur-containing enzymes. Transsulfuration reaction catalyzed by this enzyme is also involved in H₂S detoxification.
