Stosowany do denaturacji białek i jako łagodny środek solubilizujący nierozpuszczalne lub zdenaturowane białka. Przydatny do ponownej denaturacji białek z próbek już zdenaturowanych 6 M chlorkiem guanidyny, takich jak ciała inkluzyjne. Może być stosowany z chlorowodorkiem guanidyny i ditiotreitrolem (DTT) w ponownym zwijaniu zdenaturowanych białek do ich natywnej lub aktywnej postaci.
