広く普及しているグリコサミノグリカンのヘパラン硫酸（HS）は、D-グルクロン酸またはL-イズロン酸およびD-グルコサミン（GlcA）糖のポリマーで、[4]cis-Golgiの中でヘパランとして合成されます。Golgiでは、N-およびO-HS-スルホトランスフェラーゼおよびHSエピメラーゼの酵素作用により最終的なヘパラン硫酸が合成されます。成熟したHSの二糖類単位は50～200です。[5]これは、細胞外マトリックス（ECM）の一部であり、発がん経路において重要な役割を果たします。ヘパラン硫酸代謝の脱制御は、がんの進行に関与します。[6]HSは感染症や炎症性疾患の発症と関連性があります。[7]また、HSとAβ線維との相互作用はアルツハイマー病の病態生理と関連性があります。[8]ヘパラン硫酸は、細胞間接着に関与するといわれる、膜結合型プロテオグリカンの構成成分です。
