Galactosyl ceramide is a complex glycosphingolipid.[1] It is a major component of the myelin sheath and contains a single galactose residue linked to ceramide.[1][2]Galactosyl ceramide is present mainly on the surface of colonic epithelial cells, vaginal epithelium and primary mammary epithelial cells.[3]

Galactosyl ceramide is essential for normal myelin function and stability.[4] It blocks epithelial cell-human immunodeficiency virus 1 (HIV-1) virion binding.[3]
