Das α-Naphtylamin und Sulphanilsäure werden verwendet um die Nitrate Reduktion durch Bakterien zu detektieren. Organismen mit der Nitratreduktase reduzieren Nitrat zu Nitrit, welche mit Sulfanilsäure ein Diazoniumsalz bildet und mit α-Naphtylamin zu einer roten Azofarbstoff umgewandelt wird.
