Urea is a colorless, odorless solid. It has prism-like crystals. It forms insoluble nitrate salts with nitric acid and oxalate salts with oxalic acid. On reaction with alkanes or substituted alkanes, it affords crystal-lattice inclusion compounds.
Urea is the most commonly used slow release nitrogen fertilizer.

Anwendung

Wird für die Denaturierung von Proteinen und als mildes Mittel zur Solubilisierung unlöslicher oder denaturierter Proteine?? verwendet. Nützlich für die Renaturierung von Proteinen aus Proben, die bereits mit 6 M Guanidinchlorid vergällt sind, wie z.B. Einschlüssen. Kann mit Guanidin-hydrochlorid und Dithiothreitrol (DTT) für die Rückfaltung von denaturierten Proteinen in ihre native oder aktive Form eingesetzt werden.
