General description

Biochem/physiol Actions

Sonic hedgehog (Shh) is a secreted glycoprotein involved in embryonic morphogenic development of several tissues. It has a role in fracture healing and regeneration.[1][2] In the canonical pathway, the protein associates with its receptor patched (Ptc-1), de-represses smoothened (Smo) and activates the Gli family of transcription factors.[2] Mutations in the Shh pathway have been linked to developmental diseases and cancer.[3] Shh plays a vital role in axon growth and guidance throughout the brain development. Shh stimulates neurite outgrowth by overcoming neurite growth inhibitory environment associated with glial scar.[2]
