生物化学的／生理学的作用

細胞増殖やアポト-シスの研究によく用いられる鉄キレ-ト剤です。血管平滑筋細胞に対して in vitroおよびin vivoで抗増殖作用があり、細胞がG1期で停止することが示されています。p53の誘導も報告されてます。HL-60細胞で鉄をキレ-トすることによりアポト-シスを誘導します。1μM デフェロキサミン処理48時間後に、DNA断片化が認められました。わずか24時間の0.1μM デフェロキサミン処理で、アポト-シスが認められ、48時間までに核の崩壊が観察されました。いくつかの研究で、抗酸化特性を有し、H₂O₂-誘導性の障害から細胞を保護することが示されています。

細胞増殖やアポトーシスの研究にしばしば使用される鉄キレート剤。p53を誘発することも報告されています。
