サケ由来のプロタミン硫酸塩は、次の用途で使用されています。
タンパク質サンプルからのDNA除去やDNA結合タンパク質の精製に使用できます。レトロウイルス介在性の遺伝子移入を行う際に、ポリブレンの代替として使用することができます。
固体脂質ナノ粒子(SLN)型のプロタミンの場合、比較可能なSLN型のエステルクワット-1に比べ、プラスミドDNAのトランスフェクション効率が高くなり、細胞毒性は低くなります。

生物化学的／生理学的作用
硫酸プロタミンは、小型のカチオン性タンパク質で、DNAと結合して沈殿させます。ヘパリンの抗凝固活性を中和します。リポタンパク質リパ-ゼを阻害します。
