Hierzu gibt es mehrere Möglichkeiten; am beliebtesten ist die Verwendung eines Zellzyklus-Synchronisierungsmittels wie etwa Demecolcin. Demecolcin arretiert Zellen in der Metaphase und hat dabei keine merklichen Auswirkungen auf die biochemischen Ereignisse in mitotischen Zellen oder in Zellen, die in der G1- und der S-Phase synchronisiert wurden. Weiße Blutkörperchen werden häufig mit Demecolcin behandelt, um sie in der Metaphase anzuhalten.
