General description
Hemin is a pro-oxidant, hemolysis derived-product.[1] It is essential for the growth of heme-deficient organisms such as trypanosomatids.[2] Hemin readymade solution is used as a culture-medium supplement for fastidious anaerobic microorganisms, shown to enhance the growth of many anaerobes including Bacteroides species and certain gram-positive non-spore forming organisms.[3] It is present as a key ingredient compound in common anaerobic growth media, such as Brucella broth, Thioglycolate broth and Reinforced Clostridial Medium.
Application
Hemin solution may be used as a supplement in brain heart infusion-yeast extract-hemin (BHI-YH) medium to determine cholesterol-to-coprostanol reducing activity.[4]
Features and Benefits
- Convenient readymade solution to speed up media preparation
- Sterile solution
- Optimal mixture for growth of fastidious bacteria as well as diversified culturing of microbial samples
Other Notes
- For 100 ml of medium preparation, it is recommended to add 1 mL hemin ready-made solution after autoclaving the medium, to achieve a final concentration of 5 microgram/ml. The optimal concentration of the supplement may vary for each strain.
- The solution is classified as light sensitive. 2. The solution should not be heated and must be added aseptically to autoclaved media cooled to 50-55°C. 3.
- Select strains which show turbid growth (24-48 hr.) with Hemin supplementation: Porphyromonas gingivalis, Bifidobacterium longum, Clostridium perfringens, Bacteroides vulgatus and Fusobacterium nucleatum.

The excessive release of heme during hemolysis contributes to the severity of sickle cell anemia (SCA) by exacerbating hemoglobin S (HbS) autoxidation, inflammation and systemic tissue damage. The present study investigated the effect of hydroxyurea (HU) on free radical neutralization

Hemin chlorides exhibit two absorption maxima in the Soret region, one at about 360-380 nm (S' band) and the other between 400 and 430 nm (S band). We present here a simple and fast spectrophotometric assay to determine concentration of

The microbial community in the human colon contains bacteria that reduce cholesterol to coprostanol, but the species responsible for this conversion are still unknown. We describe here the first isolation and characterization of a cholesterol-reducing bacterium of human intestinal origin.
