Pentobarbital (PB) is a barbiturate and a ligand of the γ-aminobutyric acid subtype A (GABAA) receptor.[4] It is a sedative anesthetic[5] majorly used in rodent euthanasia.[4] Pentobarbital possesses hypnotic functionality[4] and muscle relaxing properties.[5] It enhances GABAergic activity.[6] Intraperitoneal injection of PB may result in loss of righting reflex (LORR) and heartbeat cessation.[5]

Solutions of the sodium salt are typically pH 9.0 - 11.0 (BP/USP). If the pH is lowered, the free acid will precipitate from solution. Solutions decompose on standing, the decomposition being accelerated at higher temperatures. We recommend to make solutions fresh.
