Application

Albumin from human serum has been used:
  • to standardize the column for molecular-exclusion chromatography[1]
  • to prepare the tobacco mosaic virus (TMV)-poly ethylene glycol (PEG8)-serum albumin (SA) particles[2]
  • to analyze its modifications after oxidation using a Fenton system[3]

Albumin-bound fluorescence was used in serum of patients with chronic renal failure.[1]

Biochem/physiol Actions

Albumin turnover is seen in infants with iron deficiency anemia.[4] Serum albumin is a reliable prognostic indicator in liver disease. Oxidative modification of albumin is seen in advanced liver disease.[5]
Albumins are soluble monomeric proteins found in the body fluids and tissues of animals and in some plant seeds. Serum albumin functions as a carrier protein for steroids, fatty acids, and thyroid hormones. Serum albumins are also vital in regulating the colloidal osmotic pressures of blood.

Albumin is also seen to bind to exogenous substances, particularly drugs (e.g., ibuprofen, warfarin), and strongly influence their pharmacokinetics. Oxidative stress leading to changes in the redox state of albumin has widely varied effects on its physiological function.

  4. Can Product A9511, Human serum albumin (HSA), be used for cell culture applications?

    1. Although A9511 is not sterile or endotoxin tested, it can probably still be used in cell culture. Filtering a solution of HSA through a 0.45 micron filter, then a 0.2 micron filter would provide a solution that is sterile, and likely suitable for cells. A5843 is an HSA product that has been endotoxin tested.
