Descrizione generale

Kynurenic acid, a tryptophan metabolite,[1][2] is a naturally occurring NMDA-receptor and an α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor antagonist in the human brain with preferential action at both of the glycine (Gly) binding sites of the N-methyl D-aspartate (NMDA)[2] and α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors.[3] This implies that the compound can have a physiological interaction with glutaminergic and cholinergic neurotransmission in the brain.[2][3] Kynurenic acid is reported to be found in elevated levels in the cerebrospinal fluid of patients with schizophrenia.[2] Its anticonvulsant and neuroprotective properties are experimentally reported.[4]

Applicazioni

Kynurenic acid may be used as an analytical standard for the quantification of the analyte in serum samples,[3][5] food and honeybee products[4] using high-performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection.
