The N-terminal Asp is the principal Cu2+ and Ni2+ chelation site; its deletion eliminates an important antigenic determinant, and the protein is hypoallergenic. Also blocked at Cys34 to improve stability, monomer content and homogeneity.

This recombinant protein contains 584 amino acid residues (66,357 Dalton) derived from the prototypical human serum albumin sequence, Gene Bank Accession No. M12523, with a single deletion of the N-terminal residue (Asp). The N-terminal deletion of the Asp reduces the affinity by which nickel and copper bind to the protein. Otherwise, the biological properties are identical as for the full-length protein.
