Das von prämenopausalen Eierstöcken hauptsächlich sezernierte Östrogen. Östrogene steuern die Entwicklung des weiblichen Phänotyps in der Embryogenese und während der Pubertät durch Regulierung der Gentranskription und folglich der Proteinsynthese. Sie induzieren auch die Produktion der Gonadotropine, welche wiederum die Ovulation auslösen. Die Exposition an Estradiol ist mit einer erhöhten Brustkrebsinzidenz und -proliferation assoziiert.
