General description
Serotonin ist ein ubiquitäres Molekül, das bei allen Tieren vorkommt. Es zeigt verschiedene Wirkungen im zentralen und peripheren Nervensystem (ZNS/PNS). Serotonin wirkt als Hormon und Mitogen. Es wird in den Axonterminalen im Gehirn erzeugt. Das Aktionspotential induziert die Freisetzung von Serotonin, das über die Synapse diffundiert und die postsynaptischen Rezeptoren stimuliert. Serotonin spielt eine entscheidende Rolle bei Entwicklung, Atmung, Wärmeregulierung sowie endokrinen, kardiovaskulären und Magen-Darm-Funktionen. Es spielt auch eine Rolle bei sensorischen Wahrnehmungsverhaltensweisen wie Schlaf-Wach-Zyklus, Sexualität, Stimmung, Gedächtnis, Aggression, Schmerzempfindlichkeit, Lernverhalten und Kognition. Serotonin beeinflusst verschiedene psychiatrische Erkrankungen wie Schizophrenie, Anorexia nervosa, Depression und eine Reihe von Angststörungen wie Zwangsstörungen, Panikattacken und soziale Phobie. Schwankungen im Serotoninspiegel sind mit impulsbedingten Störungen oder Persönlichkeitsstörungen wie Drogenmissbrauch, Glücksspiel, Aufmerksamkeitsdefizit-Störung, zwanghafte Kontrolle und Aggression verbunden.
