General description

Bovine serum albumin (BSA) is a member of the serum albumin family. It is a globular, α-helical, and non-glycosylated protein.[1] BSA is a single-chain protein and consists of three domains with two sub-domains under each.[1] It has 17-disulfide bonds.

Application

Bovine Serum Albumin solution has been used as a standard for the quantification of protein in extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) using the Lowry method.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA) facilitates the transport of drugs, hormones, and fatty acids.[1][2] It is used as a blocking agent in enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).[3] BSA is an important constituent of the cell culture media and favors embryonic stem cells (hESC) differentiation.[4] It plays a vital role in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industry.[2]
