General description
Single chain vitamin K-dependent protein produced by osteoblasts. Osteocalcin purified from bovine bone. Binds to phospholipid vesicles in the presence of Ca2+ (Kd = 6 µM). Also binds hydroxylapatite. Possible role in bone mineralization, bone resorption, and bone formation. Note: Gla corresponds to γ-carboxyglutamic acid.

Osteocalcin, bovine (499050) undergoes carboxylation. A vitamin K dependent carboxylase is responsible for post-translational modification, resulting in the production of three g-carboxyglutamic acid residues at positions 17, 21 and 24. The mature protein consists of 49 amino acids and features a single intrachain disulfide bond connecting Cys23 to Cys29. Osteocalcin is derived from bovine bone.
