A chelating agent useful for the determination of calcium in the presence of magnesium.

A chelating agent useful for the determination of calcium in the presence of magnesium. Repeated washing with EGTA-buffer can experimentally deplete cultured cells of Ca²⁺.

EGTA is suitable for use:

• in media for chelating Ca²⁺ to facilitate efficient incorporation of Sr²⁺ into the oocytes[1]
• as a component of phosphatase wash buffer used to wash magnetic beads during dephosphorylation and radiolabeling of RNA segments cross-linked to immunoprecipitated proteins[2]
• as a component of oocyte activation media[3]

Ethylene glycol-bis(β-aminoethyl ether)-N,N,N′,N′-tetra acetic acid tetrasodium salt (EGTA) dissociates mucin complex and is useful in immunohistochemical studies.[4] It suppresses root growth and mitotic index in germinating wheat seeds.[5] It is used as a decalifying agent in root canal biomechanical preparation and is effective compared to EDTA and cyclohexanediaminetetraacetic acid (CDTA).[6]

Ethylene glycol-bis(ß-aminoethyl ether)-N,N,N,N-tetra acetic acid tetrasodium salt (EGTA) is a calcium chelator that binds to Ca²⁺ in the presence of Mg²⁺ at a ratio of 1:1.
